Kreg Trim Carpentry DVD
I was considering purchasing the Kreg Master jig kit which sells for about $150. Purchasing this DVD for about $10 seemed like a good investment to try and determine how and if this investment made sense for me. I thought the DVD was well worth the $10. Several ways to use pocket holes were described, plus, I thought the DVD provided a number of other good woodworking tips, especially for projects or aspects of projects currently under way or planned. The DVD is professionally done and easy to watch. That is, I thought the DVD provided the right amount of detail without boring you by showing every single hole that was drilled. I also convinced myself that other Kreg tools, like their clamps, would be a good investment to save time and ensure consistency. I have been using biscuits for some time and avoided pocket holes simply because they seemed too much of a mystery which is not the case. Kreg perhaps should provide this video free on their site as an incentive to buy, but since they don’t, $10 is an okay price, especially when I get free shipping from Amazon.
Update (5/19/2012): This item is currently on sale here for the lowest price I’ve seen. I also found some auctions for this item here.

Save your money for a Kreg accessory
Well, if you’re an experienced builder/contractor like the gentleman hosting the video, and want to learn how pocket holes are used to build newell posts, wainscoting, and door jam extensions, then the TRIM CARPENTRY DVD my appeal to you.
But if you’re a hobbyist like me who just wants to build the occasional bookcase, small table, cabinet, etc., then you will be disappointed in this DVD. If I had to opportunity to preview it before the purchase, I would not have bought it.
This is NOT a traditional HOW-TO DVD on using the Kreg jig to build a (fill in the blank) featuring a materials list, dimensions, and tools needed. What it shows you is how pocket holes are used in the building of a window seat and wainscoting, for example. And while interesting to watch, it doesn’t make you want to run to your garage or shop and begin building a newell post or door jam extension (actual projects in the DVD), of all things! Again, the DVD is not a how-to, and the “projects”, in my opinion, are not practical or inspiring.
There are folks who’ll say it’s worth the $10, but this DVD should come free with the K3MS (the system I bought). Keep the $10 and put it toward a Kreg drill bit, driver, clamp, or even better “The Pocket Hole Drilling Jig Project Book” by Danny Proulx. Excellent book!
Finally, this review is NOT a knock against Kreg in any way. Their pocket hole jigs and accessories are top shelf. It’s just this particular DVD was a let down.
End of discussion! Be well!
