fast cuttting but needs special pilot bit

The Bosch TCHS hole cutter cuts very quickly through many different materials and is fast in cutting wood and OSB as well as sheetrock and plaster and fiberglass. It needs to be used with a Bosch quick change arbor or mandrel and it needs to be used with the 7 inch long Bosch pilot bit that is designed for the Bosch quick change system. Nice if you already have a Bosch set of hole saws but otherwise an additional $30 expense in all. The Bosch pilot bit is designed for masonry and it works well on stucco and soft brick. The Bosch masonry pilot bit is not very effective with wood or particle board and slows down the cutting operation.

Plugs clear very easily from the hole cutter and even wood plugs can be removed faster than with a bi-metal hole saw but do take some prying to get out. This is where we prefer using a hole cutter with a spade bit when making holes in wood or MDF where the hole is cut faster and the plug falls out of the cutter with no prying.

We have switched over to the Blue Boar Universal hole cutters which work with regular 2-pin arbors and all types of pilot bits and are available in a lot more sizes than the Bosch TCHS hole cutters. For mostly wood and light masonry use (Durock, plaster, fiber cement board) the Blue Boar Self-feed hole cutters provide a great hole cutter at a fraction of the cost of the Bosch or Universal hole cutters and are also available in sizes from 5/8″ to 6-1/4″ and I have used the 6-1/4″ on OSB subflooring to cut holes using just an 18 volt cordless hand drill.
