I bought this model sprinkler last year for the almost all-metal construction. I was tired of the plastic ones that don’t last a full season. The black hose connector (on the left in the photo) is plastic. This leaked from the beginning and eventually came off leaving the sprinkler useless in less than a year. I just got a refund from my local home center.

Update (2/6/2012): This item is currently on sale here for the lowest price I’ve seen.

Quailty is very iffy
I bought a 2-pack of these at a local big-box home improvement store. The pair was a little over half the cost of Gilmour’s “extra large lawn” all-metal version of this. Seemed like a pretty good bargain.

Within an hour of use I saw that one of the sprinklers wasn’t rotating. It was hard to figure out why, but eventually I noticed the spring that provides tension to the impulse arm was broken. Luckily the spring broke somewhat near one of the ends, so I was able to remove the smaller part and stretch the remaining spring and reconnect it to the impulse arm. It was tricky business involving a tin snip tool and two small needle-nose plyers. Anyway, now the spring has a bit too much tension, which requires more water pressure to get the impulse arm moving. But as long as I dont have another sprinkler simultaneously running off the same faucet connection, the water pressure is sufficient and it works.

I haven’t (yet) had any trouble with noticeable leakage at the hose connector. But it is certainly made of flimsy plastic, and I won’t be surprised if it fails too soon.

The zinc spike base feels like it’s not going to last very long. That’s because…well…it’s zinc, aka pot metal. If I treat it gingerly, and make sure not to try forcing it into rocks hidden beneath the soil, I hope it won’t break. *fingers crossed*

Ok, so given my complaints about the quality, why does it get 3 stars? Mainly because when they’re not broken, these sprinklers work quite well. And they were very inexpensive. Each one left my wallet lighter to the same extent that 8 items from McDonald’s value menu would. I wouldn’t really recommend this model unless you’re a cheapskate like me though.
If these last me through the summer I’ll be both surprised and pleased. If (when?) they break for good, I doubt I’d buy the same kind again. I’d really like to find a higher quality sprinkler than Gilmour. I’d be willing to pay around twice what Gilmour charges for something that won’t break so easily. Unfortunately all the hardware/home improvement stores I’ve visited just carry this pot-metal junk.

Into my 3rd Season
This is the third season I’m using this sprinkler head and I’ve been very happy with the performance in a small backyard.

My local garden center had a different brand that looked like it would break if you sneezed on it. I was happy to find the Gilmour metal impulse sprinklers. You feel the difference in quality just by holding it.

I haven’t run into any problems with leaks but I don’t connect and disconnect them except for the beginning and end of the season. The incoming hose connection is plastic so you should take care not to strip the threads. If you need to disconnect them frequently I would recommend getting the version on a sled base or at least getting quick disconnect couplings.

There aren’t really any instructions with the sprinkler head, but it’s pretty intuitive. Knob on the top controls distance, Stops on the shaft controls rotation and thumbscrew controls spray (that wasn’t on the package). I was a bit confused at first about something (can’t remember what) and I contacted Gilmour through their website and they were able to help me.

I would recommend this product and this company. Also look into the electronic timer to have an automated watering system.
